San Francisco Religious Discrimination Attorney

State and Federal laws protect you from religious discrimination in employment. However, many American employees have their religious freedoms violated at work. Both citizens and permanent residents are discriminated against during the hiring process and within a hostile workplace. Requests for basic accommodations for required practices and observances are also often denied.

Religious discrimination at work occurs in several ways, such as:

  • Derogatory remarks or portrayals of your religious community that contribute to the creation of a hostile work environment
  • Planning important meetings or required attendance during times that overlap with an employee’s religious practice, i.e., on a Sabbath day
  • Cutting off contact with clients due to religious wear, such as a head covering, turban or yarmulke
  • Prohibiting hairstyles or clothing pertaining to your religion, such as Mennonite head covering, Sikh long hair and beard or Rastafarian dreadlocks
  • Firing an employee for going on leave in observance of a religious holiday despite the employee’s adherence to proper protocol for requesting time off
  • Mandatory programs involving “new age” concepts that go against your religious beliefs, such as yoga or meditation
  • Accommodations for certain religious practices, such as daily prayer or Sabbath observance, are not granted despite not being an “unreasonable burden” for the employer
  • Denying pay raises, benefits, promotions or employment to individuals due to their religious beliefs and practices
